ROS 2 (Robot Operating System 2) is the next-generation robot operating system. Building upon the core design of ROS 1, it has been comprehensively upgraded to meet modern robotics requirements. ROS 2 focuses on real-time performance, distributed computing, cross-platform support, and production-grade applications, and is widely used in autonomous driving, industrial robots, drones, and intelligent service robots.

- Real-time performance and reliability: Uses DDS (Data Distribution Service) as the underlying communication mechanism, supports QoS (Quality of Service) configuration to meet high real-time requirements;
- Multi-platform support: Compatible with Linux, Windows, macOS, and RTOS (such as FreeRTOS), and supports embedded devices like Raspberry Pi and NVIDIA Jetson;
- Distributed architecture: Optimized for multi-robot collaboration, supports MicroROS, suitable for large-scale robot clusters;
- Modern design: Improved APIs, more secure communication (encryption support), more flexible build system (based on ament and colcon);

Versions and Ecosystem
Current mainstream versions include:
- Humble Hawksbill (LTS, Long-Term Support release, recommended);
- Iron Irwini;
- Rolling (latest features, but unstable).
The community provides rich functional packages (such as Navigation2, MoveIt 2), driving the rapid development of robotics technology. ROS 2 is suitable for full-scenario needs from academic research to commercial deployment.
